A collection of 40 Byzantine lead seals, mostly complete and preserving varying degrees of detail. Surfaces range from fine to very fine, with several pieces retaining identifiable iconography such as busts, crosses and monograms. An excellent research group representing administrative, ecclesiastical and private correspondence of the Byzantine world. Historical Context: Byzantine lead seals (bullae) served for more than a millennium as document authentication devices, securing imperial decrees, military orders, tax instructions and ecclesiastical letters. Their imagery often depicts Christograms, saints or the issuing official, and many seals survive today without the documents they once protected — making them valuable standalone witnesses to lost archives. Their main period of use (7th–12th century) reflects the height of Byzantine governmental structure and church influence. Each seal is a physical fragment of imperial administration and communication in the Eastern Roman world.
