Legend: ANTONINVS AVGVSTVS Reverse Virtus, helmeted and draped, standing left, holding Victory in the extended right hand and spear in the left. Legend: VIRT AVGG Historical Note Caracalla, born Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, ruled jointly with his brother Geta from AD 209 until 211, a period reflected by the plural AVGG on the reverse legend. His reign is best known for the Constitutio Antoniniana, which granted Roman citizenship to all free inhabitants of the empire. Despite his military ambitions and popularity with the army, Caracalla’s rule was marked by internal tension and ended with his assassination in AD 217.
