Obverse: Laureate head of Domitian right. The portrait is youthful and sharply profiled, typical of issues struck while he was heir to the Flavian dynasty. Reverse: PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS. Salus standing right in three-quarter view, leaning upon a column, feeding a serpent carried upon her right arm using a patera held in her left hand. A symbolic theme of health, stability, and the well-being of the imperial house. This denarius was struck while Domitian was still Caesar, before he succeeded to the throne. As youngest son of Vespasian and brother of Titus, he represented continuity of the Flavian line. The reverse message emphasised youthful leadership and the safeguarding of Rome’s future. Though Domitian’s later reign became strict and autocratic, his early image — as expressed on this coin — was one of promise, health, and imperial security.
