Obverse: IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG – laureate, draped bust right. Reverse: INVICTVS SACERDOS AVG – the emperor as high priest standing left, sacrificing with a patera over an altar, holding a branch in the left; sometimes a star in field. Elagabalus (AD 218–222) became emperor as a teenager with the backing of his grandmother Julia Maesa. A high priest of the Syrian sun god from Emesa, he shocked Rome with religious innovations and notorious scandals. In 222 he was killed by the Praetorian Guard and replaced by his cousin Severus Alexander.
