Empress: Julia Mamaea, Augusta (AD 222–235) Denomination/Metal: AR denarius (silver) Mint/Date: Rome, c. AD 222–235 Obverse: IVLIA MAMAEA AVG – draped bust right Reverse: VESTA – Vesta standing left, holding patera and long scepter After Elagabalus’ fall in AD 222, Julia Mamaea ruled as Augusta for her young son Severus Alexander and used coins like this denarius to signal a return to traditional Roman virtues. The VESTA reverse—with patera and scepter—promised piety, order, and domestic peace after religious excesses. Despite this program, stability collapsed on the frontiers; in 235 mother and son were killed by the army, ending the Severan dynasty.
