Obverse: Head of Tanit left — the Punic goddess of fertility and protector of Carthage. The style is typically African, with almond-shaped eye, smooth profile, and wreath or stylised hair. Reverse: Horse standing, usually right or left, often symbolising Carthaginian nobility and military power. The horse is one of the most iconic symbols of Punic coinage, linked to the city’s celebrated Numidian cavalry. Historical Note Struck shortly after the First Punic War (264–241 BC), this coin belongs to the period of Carthage’s recovery and expansion into Iberia — the era that would eventually produce Hannibal. These bronzes circulated widely across the western Mediterranean and formed the backbone of Punic everyday currency. They are a direct connection to the city that nearly rivaled Rome for control of the ancient world.
