The Antoninianus of Emperor Philip I, known as “the Arab,” was struck between AD 244 and 249. Originating from the province of Arabia, Philip ruled during a turbulent period in Roman history and is best remembered for celebrating Rome’s 1000th anniversary in AD 248. Obverse: Legend IMP PHILIPPVS AVG – Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of the emperor right, emphasizing his imperial dignity and military authority. Reverse: Legend NOBILITAS AVGG – Nobilitas standing front, head turned left, holding a sceptre in the right hand and a patera in the left. The type symbolizes nobility, virtue, and the moral stature of the emperor.
