Obverse: SEVERVS PIVS AVG (var.) – laureate, bearded head right. Reverse: IOVI … (legend worn) – Jupiter standing left, nude, holding a thunderbolt in the outstretched right hand and a long scepter in the left. Septimius Severus seized power in AD 193, defeated rivals Niger and Albinus, and strengthened the army. He campaigned successfully against the Parthians and later in Britain. He died at Eboracum (York) in 211, leaving the throne to his sons Caracalla and Geta.
