Obverse: Laureate head of the emperor right, legend: IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG. Reverse: Standing figure (likely Jupiter, possibly Mars) facing left, holding a scepter in the left hand and a small object in the right (possibly thunderbolt or Victory). Legend: COS II P P (= Consul for the second time, Father of the Fatherland). Severus Alexander (208–235 AD) was the last emperor of the Severan dynasty. He ascended the throne in 222 AD at the age of only 13, supported by his mother Julia Mamaea, who played a major role in imperial politics. The legend COS II P P dates this coin to around AD 224–226, during his second consulship. The title Pater Patriae (Father of the Fatherland) highlights his claim to legitimacy and imperial authority. The depiction of Jupiter or Mars holding a scepter symbolizes divine protection and imperial power. However, his reign was marked by tensions with the army. In 235 AD, he and his mother were assassinated by their own soldiers at Mogontiacum (modern Mainz), an event that triggered the Crisis of the Third Century.
