He sought cooperation with the Senate and stability while facing the rising Sasanian power in the East and pressure on the Rhine–Danube frontiers. In 235 he was killed by mutinous troops near Mogontiacum (Mainz), a moment often marked as the start of the Third-Century Crisis.
