Obverse: IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG – laureate, draped bust right. Reverse: P M TR P V COS II P P – Severus Alexander standing left, sacrificing over an altar. Brief history: A youthful ruler guided by his mother Julia Mamaea, he pursued cooperation with the Senate and prepared campaigns against the Sasanians. In AD 235 he was killed by mutinous troops near Mogontiacum (Mainz), a turning point that ushered in the Third-Century Crisis.
