Obverse: IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG – laureate, draped bust right. Reverse: IOVI PROPVGNATORI – Jupiter in a fighting stance right, holding a thunderbolt and an eagle. Brief history: A young ruler guided by his mother Julia Mamaea, Severus Alexander sought cooperation with the Senate while gearing up for campaigns against the Sasanians and tending to the Rhine–Danube frontiers. In AD 235 he was killed by mutinous troops near Mogontiacum (Mainz), often marked as the start of the Third-Century Crisis.
