Obverse legend: IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P Emperor Trajan Augustus, Germanicus, Dacicus, Pontifex Maximus, holding tribunician power. Reverse legend: COS V • SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI Consul for the fifth time; the Senate and People of Rome to the best princeps (ruler). The obverse shows Emperor Trajan; the reverse depicts a trophy, a structure assembled from captured enemy arms and armor. Between AD 101 and 106 Trajan defeated the Dacians, who lived beyond the Danube in what is now Transylvania, a region famed for its rich gold and silver deposits. The best surviving narrative of these wars is the Column of Trajan in Rome’s Forum Traiani: in 155 scenes with about 2,500 figures, it illustrates the campaigns, Roman engineering feats, and the Dacians’ ultimately futile resistance.
