Obv.: IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V P P – Laureate head of Trajan right. Rev.: SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI – Providentia standing left, holding a wand and resting hand on an altar or ship’s prow. Silver. Diameter approx. 18–19 mm. Weight approx. 3 g. Reference: RIC II Trajan 148ff. This coin was struck during the reign of Emperor Trajan, widely regarded as one of Rome’s greatest rulers. The reverse inscription “SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI” (“The Senate and People of Rome – to the best prince”) reflects his immense popularity and esteem. The figure of Providentia represents his foresight and care for the Roman state.
